Why Consistency Matters More Than Perfection in Marketing

Why Consistency Matters More Than Perfection in Marketing

Many business owners delay marketing because they want everything to be perfect and this is especially true for small to medium sized business marketers and owners. New businesses tend to face this same difficulty as well.

You want the perfect image but you’re waiting for the day when you’re camera ready.

You want the perfect video but you want to upgrade your equipment.

You want the perfect website but you’re not sure who to contact. (Green T Design slowly raises their hand).

You want the perfect social media post but you’re not taking the time to plan or create.

While wanting your business to look professional and put together is not the actual problem and is a very good thing, the thing that is hurting you is that while you’re waiting, your competitors are staying visible or at the very least, moving forward with their marketing efforts.

It’s best to keep it in your mind that consistent marketing builds trust for you, awareness of your business and eventually new leads for your products and services, even when it’s not perfect.

Marketing Perfection Creates Content Paralysis

The “We’ll Post to Social When We Have Time” Trap

Social media often gets pushed to the bottom of the priority list, especially if you or members of your team are wearing many hats and doing many tasks. Add in the worry or desire to make every post perfect and paralysis sets in.

Does this sound familiar? You’ll get busy answering phones or emails and forget to take a picture of the finished product going out the door or the recent customer gushing over your food and drink. Sometimes months may pass between posts and customers who are researching you via their social channels start to wonder if your business is still active.

Meanwhile, your competitor just took 5 minutes to post their monthly specials and their post popped up in your newsfeed.

If you’re waiting on professional photos, new branding, a website redesign, better equipment, more staff, etc. you still need to post in the interim. Because your competitor is going to beat you to it. And if they aren’t, more points for you!

Use the waiting as content! A really great post would be asking what functions your customers would like to see in your next website. Find out which inspo pics they like for your team’s photo shoot. Inquire about their favorite flavors as the equipment gets updated. Be honest about the waiting but make it fun and interesting!

Why Marketing Consistency Wins

1.    Customers Need Repetition

Most people won’t buy the first time they see your business. You need to allow time for them to be curious about you or have the need come up that you can fulfil. Repeated exposure creates familiarity and trust. Marketing is often about staying top-of-mind until customers are ready to buy.

2.    Consistency Builds Credibility

Active social media accounts signal an active business. Regular updates show professionalism and can become a resource for your clients. How can they use your product, why would they choose your service, the specials this week or how they can get in touch with you are all options for regular posts. Customers are more likely to trust businesses that appear engaged and responsive.

3.    Search Engines Reward Consistency

And we aren’t just talking about social media here. Regular website updates can improve SEO including new blogs and project updates. Consistent Google Business Profile activity helps local visibility. Fresh content gives search engines more opportunities to understand your business and more chances that customers with linger on your website.

  • Tips and FAQs
  • Blog snippets

Genuine Content Still Works

While we would never say that your social media pages, website, emails, etc shouldn’t look professional because that is extremely important, we do get behind using the resources you have available.

Simple phone videos are exceptional for social media marketing including Reels, YouTube Shorts, etc. Everyday employee photos can be snapped on a phone and used quickly, even without edits.  Quick customer testimonials do wonders for confirming the popularity of your business and before-and-after photos and videos will truly tell the story you’re looking to share.

Customers care that you can solve their problem, that your business is trustworthy, that you’re responsive and you have experience in the services they’re looking to hire someone for. All the bells and whistles in the world won’t make up for a bad product or customer service issues.

Tips for Marketing Consistency:

  • Create or use a content calendar to reduce the stress of deciding what to post and keep yourself on track.
  • Take photos throughout the month even if you’re not sure what you’ll use them for, and do the same with video, too. You’ll be happy to have a library of your own stock photos to use at the ready.
  • Use Meta or scheduling software to batch your posts ahead of time. Spend just a few hours at the beginning of the month and you’ll have a flow of posts for weeks to come.
